College Halo: Week 1 Power Rankings

Written by: Ryan Sebek, Eder Palacios, Michael Hare

College Halo is back with some familiar faces and some newcomers looking to make a name for themselves. With two tiers of competition, there is plenty of action that happened during the first week of play.

Division 1

Week one of D1 College Halo gave us clear results about where teams should be power ranking wise.

  • Miami (OH) vs North Georgia

The first game was Miami (OH) vs North Georgia. Going into this game, North Georgia were heavy favorites even though it was HueDogs debut game. The NightHawks did not disappoint their supporters. North Georgia made a case to why they should be #1 with a dominant 3-0 victory over the RedHawks.

After the victory, we got to ask HueDog how filling the shoes of LCDR Spartan was in his debut game. “I'd say so far it has gone great. The team is awesome, and they are all great players I can learn from. I only have about 100 hours in the game, but being super competitive I feel like I'm able to pick things up pretty quickly. From looking at VOD and getting advice from the guys I've already started to feel more confident. Zoom told me as long as I continue to get 1% better every time I hop on, that is all they ask of me and the results will show.” We at College Halo are excited to see how HueDog will adapt to the high level of competition. With the perfect coaches around him, Killjoy and LastShot, UNG is sure fire top contender for the title.

  • Fisher vs Ferris State

Reigning Champions Fisher College start the season off as strong as they are known to be with a swift 3-0 Victory over Ferris State University. Certainly a tough opponent for Ferris State as they are one of the teams to have been promoted from Division 2 last season, though they have a lot of time to put the pieces together and get some series wins on their record.

  • Utah State Blue vs RIT Orange

Utah State University and Rochester Institute of Technology faced off in week 1 with a strong 3-1 series score going in favor of Utah State. Rochester, of course, was able to still take a map off of last year’s third place D1 team, proving they have what it takes to put up a fight and potentially come back stronger later in the season.

We caught up with ThoughtfulFace of Utah State to see how the game went for them. “Match was really good. Always competitive. Love playing against those guys when we get the chance. Slayer was rough and their team play was good, it rattled our composure a bit. We went 4-3 on a KOTH after but were able to pull it out and roll our momentum from there. The Interference Holds for map 4 was great for us. Able to put a hold together and just sit there for 250 ticks. Love those guys and it was a great series. Can’t wait to see them in playoffs.”

This was Full Sail’s first game in D1 with a brand new roster. Full Sail had a great run in the spring under the leadership of Leon, which was capped off with a 7/8th place finish in D2. With a bunch of work put in during the off season, Full Sail set their eyes on making a name for themselves in D1; however, they ran into a brick wall known as Southern Mississippi. Led by Carti and Widowmaker, the Golden Eagles made easy work of the D1 hopefuls in 3-0 fashion. Full Sail showed moments of greatness, which with time will become a staple of their game.

Utah Valley Black is another new face within the D1 ranking of College Halo, facing off against South Florida in their first week of play. Unfortunately for Utah Valley, South Florida took the win in this week 1 series with a scoreline of 3-1. Map 2 Slayer was the map that Utah Valley had won, so if they can work on their objective gametypes they could come out to have a strong showing during the rest of the season.
